The development of Kuehne + Nagel in the Netherlands
When Alfred Kuehne began the internationalisation of the company in the 1950's by opening subsidiaries in Canada and the Middle East, he also focused on the Netherlands as a strategic location within Europe. In 1956 Kuehne + Nagel established its Dutch subsidiary in Rotterdam, and for more than four decades seafreight was the predominant activity together with consolidated overland transport. The company's ongoing commitment to Rotterdam was confirmed in 1985 with the construction of a new container terminal.
The launch of airfreight and insurance brokerage services in 2000 began the expansion of the company's portfolio. A few years later, in 2006, the Kuehne + Nagel Group took the decision to acquire ACR Logistics; a company offering contract logistics and supply chain management solutions within certain key European markets. The Netherlands benefited from this move and following the successful integration of the ACR organisation into the Kuehne + Nagel network, the company's contract logistics offering to the Dutch market was strengthened significantly. Today, Kuehne + Nagel Netherlands operates across 27 locations with 2,700 employees.
