Even one small office can emit three to five tonnes of carbon dioxide a year!
Starting this year we have:
- Managing idle capacities (Space consolidation, lights out, operating equipment utilisation)
- Reduced fleet size of operating equipment (less charging / propane usage)
- Introducing motion activated lighting to 23% of the space monitored within 2009
- Moving facilities to new Master Distribution Centres (MDC) has brought environmental improvements and reduction in consumption of electricity
- Implementing new policies on usage of electronic devices, such as reducing daily usage of lighting in less-occupied warehouse and office areas, turning off unused computer monitors and office equipment at night and weekends
- Installation of motion-sensing lighting in common areas, restrooms.
- Replacing of spent light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs
- Installation of timers on forklift battery chargers and set to re-charge during “off-peak hours” to reduce energy consumption
- Changing of electricity providers which resulted in better rates and cost savings
- Adjustment of thermostat settings downward in cold months and upward in summer months. 11 branches kept their same thermostats, but added locking covers to minimize adjustments throughout the day
- Installation of programmable thermostats then set the device to efficient settings during business hours, off-hours and weekends
- Setting a schedule with HVAC vendor to replace system filters regularly to keep the system operating efficiently
- Environmental awareness briefing for all staff, accompanied by a poster and sticker campaign
- Education programme in Ireland leading to a 7% reduction in energy consumption and a 15 point increase in recycling
- MHE ‘Olympics’ to encourage better fork-lift truck driving techniques
- 28 days were dedicated to training the 94 UK Environment Champions in 2009
- Stop computer and heating at night. Verification that all lights are off
- Auto-control of temperature with placement of thermometer in desk-side
- Intervention in case of problem of insulation in depots
- Corrective and preventive maintenance of the equipments
