Climate change is a global challenge with potentially serious consequences for our social and economic infrastructure, as well as the natural environment. Kuehne + Nagel has established an environment policy that commits us to offering environmentally sound, sustainable and innovative supply chain solutions. Reducing negative impact on the environment, and promoting sustainability, are an integral part in the formulation of our strategy and decision-making at every level.

Some of our support initiatives include:

Global Facility Carbon Calculator

In accordance with its environmental strategy, Kuehne + Nagel has introduced the Global Facility Carbon Calculator (GFCC) in its warehouse operations. The GFCC is a tool to prioritise and monitor actions to reduce carbon emissions (CO2), landfill waste, and the consumption of energy, fuel and water.

Kuehne + Nagel is focusing on environmental sustainability by setting up an internal program to reduce energy costs, water and waste. This initiative considers the conscious use of all energy resources and promotes environmental awareness among employees.

A few of the savings activities established at our warehouses and offices include:

  • The switching off of lights when daylight is sufficient or areas are unoccupied
  • Automatic light controls
  • Energy-efficient lighting (T5 lighters with electronic power supply unit or LED)
  • Use of motion detectors, timers, and daylight detection control
  • Use of energy-efficient engines and drives in automated systems
  • Control and improvement of heating systems
  • Checking load management
  • Re-use of rainwater
  • Improvements in waste separation
  • Compression of waste

Green standard for new buildings

In addition to the optimisation of existing properties, Kuehne + Nagel has standardised the planning of new 'green buildings'. The latest examples are our three cross docking terminals built in 2010, in Andrézieux, Bourges and Chaponnay (France), amounting to 19,000 square metres powered by solar energy, and 100% CO2 neutral.

Some examples of the green elements that Kuehne + Nagel implements for selected buildings are:

  • Solar power
  • Rainwater harvesting and utilisation
  • Greening of roofs
  • Floor heating
  • Thermal reclamation from air-conditioning systems
  • Thermal reclamation from server rooms
  • Long-life T5 lighters
  • Solar heat
  • Greening facades
  • Water-permeable paving
