Certified Air Cargo Screening Program

The Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) is requiring all Direct Carriers and Indirect Air Carriers (IACs) to deploy specific security measures and cargo screening processes for cargo scheduled on flights leaving the United States.

There are two key 2010 deadlines associated with this mandated program:

  • May 1 -- 75% of cargo scheduled on passenger flights departing US airports must be screened
  • August 3 -- 100% of cargo scheduled on passenger flights departing US airports must be screened

Kuehne + Nagel has been engaged in the TSA air-cargo screening technology pilot since its inception, and was among the first entities with multiple TSA-certified cargo-screening facilities.

All our major U.S. gateways, as well as selected strategic locations -- including ATL, CHI, HOU, LAX, MIA, IAD, SFO, DFW, PHL, CLT and ORL -- were certified by January 2009 and have since been tendering cargo, as screened.

To meet the certification requirements, we made significant investments in non-intrusive screening technology (such as X-ray equipment and explosive-trace detectors), as well personnel, training, enhanced facility security, program administration and chain-of-custody procedures.

Kuehne + Nagel also has been awarded “designation” status under the SAFETY Act for the Certified Cargo Screening Program. As one of the few IACs holding this designation, Kuehne + Nagel is able to extend its liability limitations to all customers for anti-terrorism services, such as cargo screening.
